Learn You a Game Jam Day 7 devlog

So, today was a day I was too busy to work on the game but I did a lot of introspective thinking.

This is my first gamejam, and as the days have gone by, I'm realizing an important lesson:

Keep things small

I thought I knew how to keep my scope small but I really truly did not understand just how small I needed to make things, to set things in their bare bones, to have something working in such a small timeframe. This gamejam, even if I don't fully complete the game, I will submit and learn from this experience.

I got so caught up in having something with a functional job system, level system, magic, etc, that I didn't realize these were all long term things, things I didn't quite need to have, that I ran out of time on the things I do need.

Any progress is good progress, even failures

I have learned so much in such a short timeframe, however, and would never wish I could reverse time and redo things since I feel like I will be much better equipped for the future, I just think that if I did go back, I would do things so much more differently - but that just shows growth in my opinion.

Despite everything, I did learn how to make a job system, a tile based system, a level system, etc. I realized I could make some isometric art if I really tried hard enough, that pixel art is about getting 2-3 of a colour (eg//purple, light purple, dark purple) and getting as much detail to translate in the smallest amount of pixels.

I didn't have time to learn music yet but I'm sure in a future game I will implement some custom music and I'm gonna be so proud of myself.
